Concessioning tourism opportunities in conservation
areas and maximizing rural development:
Lessons and the way forward for Mozambique and other Southern African
countries

The IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Tourism
and Protected Areas Specialist Group (TAPAS group) worked in partnership
with Technoserve and the African Safari Lodges Foundation (ASLF)
to host a 4-day international training workshop on tourism concessions.
This was held between 19 and 22 March 2012 in Maputo with support
from USAID/SPEED and the Ford Foundation. The focus of the event
was review best practices and challenges from southern Africa, to
build capacity in regionally on tourism concessions, and to strengthen
networks and communication between interested stakeholders, and
also to review a concessions manual developed for Mozambique..

International Seminar on Ecotourism and Protected Areas,
Maputo, 5-7 November 2008
United Nations World Tourism Organization
This seminar was held in Maputo, Mozambique, in November 2008.
It focused on the contribution of ecotourism to community development,
poverty reduction and financing of protected areas. The event was
intended to provide opportunities for countries in the region to
present experiences and examples, as well as analyzing the case
of Mozambique and the Great Limpopo National Park, in order to reflect
and discuss on the opportunities and challenges of ecotourism, related
policy issues and management techniques. The seminar aimed at providing
a practical experience for policy makers, managers, operators and
development organizations involved in ecotourism, through dynamic
exchanges and concrete examples.

Case studies on nature-based tourism and poverty alleviation,
Johannesburg, 19-21 May 2008
African Safari Lodges Foundation / Ford Foundation
South African case studies developed for information dissemination
of best practice workshops between South Africa, India and Brazil.
Case studies developed address the policy context, planning and
development, tourism products and activities, impacts (environmental,
social and economic) and current issues and replicability. Three
of the case studies developed focus on Phinda Private Game Reserve
and Rocktail Beach Lodge in South Africa, and the Torra Conservancy
in Namibia.
